Depends on the state. I have seen where in states where CCW'S are required if it's popped out and a cop sees it you can get arrested. Here in VA we are an open carry state so it doesn't matter

Open carry is allowed here to but you should see the highway clear out around me when my shirt blows up.

It's hard not to notice how many of you guys carry when you're riding. Is it really that necessary? Being a country boy I figure I'm more likely to run into dangerous critters then most of you brown bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, and moose aren't an uncommon sight here but packing isn't going to make a bit of difference if I run into one of these guys on the road.

Police say three bikers surrounded the victim and shot him all while traveling 70 miles an hour down the highway

I carry a 1911, condition 1 in a shoulder holster.

I understand what you're saying. I carry not because if the ride, but because of work. I run a tire warehouse in the middle of nowhere with just one employee and I've got anywhere between 6-10 million dollars in inventory at any point in time. We've been robbed once before I carried and I said never again.

Yes, on a bike you don't have many friends. Don't know what it is but that's my experience. People screw with guys on bikes. Do a lot of longer road trips and it's not so lonely when you have a friend along for the ride. Better to have it and not need it than...well, you know. Not sure what it's like up there but I'm guessing the human population is much less for you than most guys on here. If I was riding in AK, I'd probably bring something a little larger than my 357 or my 45. Probably pack the 44mag up there

It isn't necessary until it is.

Thankfully not a problem we have to worry too much about north of the border. I've lived in five countries and never had the need of a gun, or been in a situation where I would, in my civil life. Only time anyone actually pointed a gun at me was when I was passing a building a bit north of Toronto where HA was having a party. Cops stopped everyone on a bike, not just guys wearing colours. Ordered on the ground and searched.

I run a desantis outside the waistband at 4 o'clock with a ruger p89 most of the time. I'm in Oklahoma which is a open carry state, so i do not worry much about my shirt blowing up here. I am however right on the border of AR, so when i cross over the state line i just pull my pants up high like Steve Urkel and pull my shirt down and tuck it behind the bottom side of my holster, works for me. As for the "Is it really necessary" question, the way i see it, it's kinda like that spare tire and jack in the back of your cage. It takes up space, adds weight, and is unnecessary for the most part, but what shall you do if you need it and don't have it ?? I personally get out of bed and think to myself i hope i don't have to use this today as i am strapping up, not asking myself is this really necessary? Hell yes its necessary!!

I carry a 1911 OWB about 4 o'clock. I pull my shirt over it, and I wear a vest. I'll wear a shoulder holster sometimes if I'm wearing a jacket. I'm in Missouri.

I'm not sure if any amount of firepower would have saved his ass...a minigun maybe.
